ISO/IEC 42001 is the international standard for artificial intelligence management systems. Published in late 2023, it sets out a management-system framework — similar in structure to ISO 27001 for information security — that an organisation can implement to govern its use of AI responsibly. It covers AI impact assessments, risk treatment, roles and responsibilities, data governance for AI systems, monitoring, and continual improvement. In plain terms: it turns AI adoption from an unmanaged experiment into a governed capability.
Why should this matter in Nigeria? Three reasons. First, accountability: when an AI system makes or shapes a decision that affects a customer, an employee, or a patient, someone must be able to explain and defend that decision — to management, to auditors, and increasingly to regulators. Second, trust: organisations that can demonstrate responsible AI practices will win confidence from partners, investors, and international clients who now ask governance questions in due diligence. Third, career positioning: professionals who understand AI governance are still rare. Boards and executive teams are actively looking for people who can translate AI risk into practical controls.
Who should train on ISO 42001? The standard is written for anyone who governs, builds, or assures AI systems. Risk and compliance officers who need to extend existing frameworks to AI. Information security and data protection professionals whose scope now includes AI systems. Product and technology managers who make build-and-buy decisions about AI features. Internal auditors who will be asked to review AI controls. And executives who sponsor AI programmes and carry accountability for their outcomes.
The PECB certification path for ISO/IEC 42001 mirrors the familiar three-level structure. Foundation covers the concepts, structure, and vocabulary of the standard. A question we are often asked: is AI governance not just data protection again? The two overlap but are distinct. Data protection law — including the Nigeria Data Protection Act — governs how personal data is collected and processed. AI governance covers that, plus model behaviour, algorithmic bias, transparency, human oversight, and the ethics of automated decision-making. An organisation can be fully compliant with data protection law and still have unmanaged AI risk. ISO 42001 is the framework that closes that wider gap.
For teams, the practical starting point is usually a mixed cohort: one or two people at Lead Implementer level to build the programme, an auditor to keep it honest, and a short executive briefing so leadership understands what it is approving and why. That is the same pattern organisations used successfully for ISO 27001, and it works here.
